The skinny: Along with Blur’s “Modern life is rubbish”, Suede’s debut, self-titled LP set the groundwork and etched out the blueprints for the Britpop phenomenon of the mid-1990s. The deadly duo of Brett Anderson and Bernard Butler made for sleazy and salacious glam rock, the likes of which we will never see again. This 25th anniversary silver edition comes with 9 B-side tracks released during the era on the second disc of the set, which spells bonus, any way you slice it.

There are a lot of songs on there, JP… can’t grumble at getting a bunch of B-sides, eh?
I was very unsure about Suede at the time… I just didn’t know what to make of them, y’know? I only really revisited and fully appreciated them a few years ago… like you say, Anderson and Butler made quite the team… that guitar was filthy sounding at times and Anderson’s voice is sneering all the time.

Can’t grumble at all. I’ve been spinning these two discs quite a bit over the last 48 hours and I feel this purchase was worth every penny. Now to search for Dog Man Star…

It’s this kinda stuff that labels should really be putting the effort into reissuing… not Ry Cooder and Elton John albums you can find cheap in pretty much any secondhand record store.

I have never heard their music. The Drowners song sounds pretty cool. I like the guitar tone, the bass and the vocals.
I am a Suede newb. Where would I start. Prefer to go for cheaper used. Maybe a comp?

There is a Best of Suede compilation that gathers the singles from their first five albums (ie, the ones before they went on hiatus). But I feel you would probably appreciate the first two albums the most, the ones before Bernard Butler left the group and things got cleaner and shinier. Look for Suede and Dog Man Star and if you’re in the mood for something poppier, Coming Up has lots of great pop singles.

Another band in the Britpop sweepstakes I avoided at the time (not my bag) but I have to say that is a pretty vinyl, and limited and RSD to boot. Sweet!
