Vinyl love: Erasure “The innocents”

(Vinyl Love is a series of posts that quite simply lists, describes, and displays the pieces in my growing vinyl collection. You can bet that each record was given a spin during the drafting of each corresponding post.)

Artist: Erasure
Album Title: The innocents
Year released: 1988
Year reissued: 2016
Details: 30 years limited edition, 180 gram

The skinny: Back in 2016, iconic synth pop duo Erasure celebrated their 30th anniversary together and to celebrate, they reissued their first twelve albums on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl. I enjoyed a lot of their early work but for me, there was one album that I decided was a must for my collection. “The innocents” was Vince Clarke and Andy Bell’s fourth album together and was my introduction to their music. The album spent many hours in my walkman and in the cassette deck of my bedroom stereo. I know each of the ten tracks very well. Some of them sound a bit dated today but that didn’t stop me from ranking it at number nine when I counted down my favourite albums of 1988 last summer. This is some serious 80s throwback.

Standout track: “Chains of love”

Vinyl love: The Waterboys “Fisherman’s blues”

(Vinyl Love is a series of posts that quite simply lists, describes, and displays the pieces in my growing vinyl collection. You can bet that each record was given a spin during the drafting of each corresponding post.)

Artist: The Waterboys
Album Title: Fisherman’s blues
Year released: 1988
Year repressed: 2015
Details: 180 gram, black vinyl, 2006 remaster

The skinny: You might remember that this particular album hit the number three spot on the Best albums of 1988 series I did back in the summer. In that particular post, I spoke about how I came across the album and its incredible title track but I was remiss in not mentioning how obsessed I became with it and through repeat listens managed to get my wife into it as well. So of course, when I saw a 180 gram reissue of it on a record store shelf one day, I had to add it to my collection. It’s some great stuff for a Sunday morning spin.

Standout track: “Fisherman’s blues”

Vinyl love: The Decemberists “Her majesty…”

(Vinyl Love is a series of posts that quite simply lists, describes, and displays the pieces in my growing vinyl collection. You can bet that each record was given a spin during the drafting of each corresponding post.)

Artist: The Decemberists
Album Title: Her majesty The Decemberists
Year released: 2003
Year reissued: 2008
Details: 180 gram, black vinyl

The skinny: Happy Monday all! It’s the last one of the month and it seems like as good a time as any to talk up the final Decemberists piece in my vinyl collection (for the time being). The indie folk stalwarts released their sophomore album, “Her majesty” back in 2003 and frontman Colin Meloy was truly at his literate and dramatic best. Just have a peek at the bonus short story included on the liner sleeve of this 2008 re-pressing by Kill Rock Stars. Yeah, you know that I still recommend these guys to anyone for an appreciation for the written word.

Standout track: “The soldiering life”
