The skinny: Just over five months ago, another great 90s record turned 30 years old and this one an iconic shoegaze classic. But as I wrote when the song mentioned below appeared at number twenty-two on my list of favourite songs from 1993, Slowdive was a group from the original scene that I never properly appreciated until much later. I had “Souvlaki” dubbed to cassette but rarely listened to it. I had to track it down again much later when I felt compelled to give them another chance and of course, this time it stuck. So by the time the original members reunited again in 2014, I was getting to be quite the fan and I had already added this Music on Vinyl, 180 gram reissue to my record shelves. Of course, both of their post-reunion records are also on my shelves and I’ve seen them live now twice, including their amazing show in support of their newest record in Toronto back in September. And I can tell you, this record hit the platter a few times before and after that show for the mood-setting and memory shake-ups.

Vinyl love: Death Cab For Cutie “Transatlanticism”

The skinny: I finally got around to purchasing a full pass to this year’s Ottawa Bluesfest and I can’t even really explain why I procrastinated so much. The organizer’s typically do a pretty good job of putting together a diverse lineup that tries to please everyone to some extent (and invariably, disappoints many) but this year’s lineup suits my own personal tastes better than it has for many years now. There’s at least one act on each of the festival’s nine days that I really want to see*. And one of the acts I’m most looking forward to is Death Cab for Cutie, who I saw live for the first time more than 15 years ago but haven’t seen since. This performance is part of the tour supporting last year’s “Asphalt meadows” but they are also touring in the fall to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their now iconic 4th album, “Translatlanticism”. I can’t even believe that I purchased the copy of this very same record for my vinyl shelves a decade ago: a 10th anniversary, 180-gram double LP edition, complete with a gatefold sleeve and a lovely 12-page booklet. This was procured back when my collection was still in its infancy and probably just around the time that I finally bought my turntable. “Transatlanticism” was a no-hesitation purchase because it was my introduction to this great band upon its initial release and with all the albums they’ve released since, it’s one I return to time and time again.

Vinyl love: Spiritualized “Laser guided melodies”

The skinny: So this six-ish week journey through my collection of Spiritualized records ends where it started for the group. “Lazer guided melodies” is the 1992 debut album that appeared two years after Jason Pierce dissolved his first band, Spaceman 3, and re-formed the same members, minus Peter Kember, with a new name. It was a natural progression forward and laid the bedrock for what was to come, the special production just a glimpse at Pierce’s ear for perfection. From what I can tell, this 2011 reissue is a faithful reproduction of the original packaging and 45 rpm mastering, albeit pressed to two 180 gram discs. Each side is a colour-coded, three song, cross-faded suite. And each side is an exercise in psychedelic noise beauty. This is just yet another record in this set that I purchased early on in my collecting and has seen many a late night on my turntable.
