Vinyl love: Ride “Going blank again”

The skinny: I just got back from Toronto a few days ago, where I was visiting family and friends and celebrating the holidays. As is my new-ish tradition, I went out to the record shops a couple of days after Christmas to take advantage of the “Boxing Day” specials. Did I find anything you might ask? The answer is: Yes, I sure did! In fact, I had to put a few records back on the shelves for my next excursion! This reissue of Ride’s second album, “Going blank again”, was one of four that I held on to, each one was most definitely a necessity for my collection. This particular album was the first I had heard from Ride and is probably still my favourite by the band. All you need to do is listen to the ‘standout track’ below for an excellent reason for why it is still so relevant.

The skinny: Well, I guess this had to be done. I was out at Record Centre, one of my local shops in Ottawa, perusing the Black Friday sales last month and saw this gem for a measly $16. I actually put it down, thought better of it, and went back for it. This classic is now the lone Christmas album on my vinyl shelves and really, the only jazz one there so far as well. This green ‘special’ pressing is one of many remastered pressings this soundtrack has seen over the years and I’m imagining most self-respected collectors have a copy or two of it. Listening to it puts me in the spirit, much like watching Bill Murray’s “Scrooged” does, and reminds me of so many years of watching Charlie and his pals learn the true meaning of Christmas. The skinny: Much like Piroshka’s “Brickbat”, an album I posted for this series just over a week ago, The Tallest Man on Earth’s latest didn’t quite make my top ten favourite albums when I finalized my list but it bore mentioning nonetheless and I snuck it in the banner photo at the top of that introductory post. Funny thing about this record, though, is that its purchase was almost by accident. Indeed, I was at one of my local record shops just before this year’s Bluesfest, looking for the latest album by Colter Wall, so that I could properly prepare for his set at the festival, and I saw this copy of “I love you. It’s a fever dream.” sitting on the shelf. I had almost forgotten that the Swedish indie folk singer/songwriter was releasing his fifth album this year but when I saw it, I remembered his own set at Bluesfest from a few years before and knew I had to buy it. It’s plenty more excellently written tunes, sown from much the same plot as his previous two albums, but the sound just never seems to get old. And just check out that colour! It reminds of the old glow-in-the-dark frisbees, so much cool that I had to post an extra photo of it.
